COUNSELOR in TRAINING PROGRAM!
WHAT IS IT?: The Counselor in Training Program is designed for 16 and 17 year olds who desire to learn more about becoming the women God has called them to be. It is a time of learning what it means to be a Biblical leader, increasing in outdoor wilderness experience, learning more about being a Tapawingo Camp Counselor, helping out ‘behind the scenes’ on the island, receiving Biblical direction on many issues that teenage girls encounter today and so much more! Individuals not interested in being a Tapawingo counselor can still benefit from the C.I.T program.
FOR WHOM?: The program is for girls ages 16 through 17. (Please note that 16 - 17 year olds are STILL able to participate in regular Tapawingo sessions if they desire).
HOW ARE PARTICIPANTS CHOSEN?: The Counselor in Training program has a limited number of spots, and applications are required. Any camper within the age range can apply, but not all are guaranteed a spot. Also, age or years as a camper at Tapawingo will not necessarily guarantee acceptance over a younger or less experienced camper. Most of all, we want participants with a deep desire to grow in the Lord and those whom will benefit the most from the structure of the program. In C.I.T participants we are looking for a steady, year-round commitment to Christ, maturity (spiritual, emotional, and relational), leadership potential, and most of all, a willing and teachable heart. With this in mind, it is a good idea to speak with the director about booking a regular camp week in addition to a CIT week in the case that your daughter does not get accepted into the program. In many ways, we evaluate CIT applications in the same way as our staff applications. However, completion of this program does not automatically ensure a position on staff.
WHEN : This program is three weeks in length.
The first three week session begins July 4th and lasts until July 24th, 2010.
The second three week session begins July 25th and lasts until August 14th, 2010.
SET-UP OF PROGRAM : Each Counselor in Training Participant will experience an outdoor, four-day wilderness excursion as a C.I.T. group. For the rest of their time they will experience life on the island through participation in an assortment of leadership training activities, group initiatives, group discussions and assisting the counseling and administrative staff in various activities at Camp Tapawingo. Each C.I.T. will also participate in a 12-hour solo fast. Woven throughout the entire three weeks will be activities, discussions and devotions centered around Bible study, the spiritual disciplines, discipleship, and the attributes of God.
GOALS OF THE PROGRAM : It is my hope that every C.I.T. participant would accomplish the following objectives:
Grow in their personal relationship with the Lord through meaningful discussions, personal quiet times and an overall greater knowledge of what they believe and why they believe it.
Learn the foundations of being a Tapawingo counselor. Also, have opportunities to lead activity areas, devotionals, singing and drama (if desired) and share any other talents each C.I.T. may have, all under the supervision of Tapawingo staff members!
Learn how to share the gospel with others.
Gain an understanding of their spiritual gifts and how to use them for the glory of God!
Develop deep, long lasting friendships with each C.I.T. participant. Understand what it means to love and serve others as Christ has displayed for us.
COST : This three-week program is the cost of 2 weeks at Camp Tapawingo. That equals $990 plus a $10 membership fee.
Please contact me for an application. Each session holds SIX participants! SO, don’t delay, apply today! If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (518) 774-6713 or tapawingo@camp-of-the-woods.org. I look forward to hearing from you soon! |

I learned about how important having goals are. That by completing tasks, we work toward our goals. I was challenged to expand my paradigms of many things, and during that time, some of my own paradigms were shattered, and I had to pick up those pieces and throw them away, in order to learn and be taught and absorb. I learned about filling my cup, taking in and pouring out. About diet and exercise becoming spiritual and social – not just physical. How cups are meant to be filled, emptied, and re-filled. I was reminded of the power of God. The faithfulness of God. The Sovereignty of God. Our need to fall on Jesus in hard times, how things of this world shouldn’t really matter. To look upwards. That there are no such things as coincidences – they are “God sightings.” I’ve learned so much about the power of Christ: that we are to rest in Him, in His love, in our weariness that will be taken away. I’ve gratefully been told how we, as women, are sacred in the Lord’s eyes: that we should not cause others to sin in the way we dress, nor shall we be obsessed with the body the Lord has given us. That being single is the time to seek the Lord with all our hearts, souls, and minds and that marriage is a partnership – but that it will not automatically change either the woman or the man. That in all these things we are to clothe ourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and above all, in love…I’ve learned about gifts and that it’s about the Giver and not the receiver.
- Amanda Karwel, CIT 2009
I’ve learned first impressions are generally wrong…I learned about challenges. They are impossible without effort, support, and goals…That I need to LISTEN and RESPECT. That very often I need to just shut my mouth and BITE MY TONGUE. But at other times, I need to open my mouth, and open it wide – how will they know if we won’t even speak? I’ve learned that Bible intake is THE most important spiritual discipline, and the most difficult – that if we take it in, it will overflow from our lives…I’ve learned that disciplines lead to godliness, out ultimate goal…That my love fails, but HIS is unfailing…I’ve learned we are CUPS – meant to be filled with Christ, but we must be positioned beneath the source. How we are meant to be filled, emptied, and refilled…I’ve learned about worship; how it is ascribing worth to something. How we worship a multitude of things everyday…but do we truly worship Jesus, the only one worthy of our worth-ship? I’ve learned about gifts. How they are to be ACCEPTED and used; how they are about the GIVER, not the receiver. I learned about trials, and how Christ uses tough times to draw us ever closer to Him. I’ve learned that even I, who fails daily, can be used in mighty ways…How our speech needs to be uplifting, and only spoken if it is true, kind, and necessary…How it is for FREEDOM Christ set us free…I’ve learned that sometimes you need to slow down or speed up but always, always stay together. Set a pace that all can follow…That even in the lowest of valleys, I need to live in light of the mountaintop view…I’ve learned about stepping up to the plate and at times falling back; only with the Lord’s discernment can I know when each of these steps are necessary…I’ve learned so much about time…Time is everything. Everything happens in God’s perfect timing; we seem to never have enough time, or have too much of it. We are bound by time, but simultaneously, we are bound for the Promised Land, where we are made to be; where we are no longer limited to 24-hour days – we have ETERNITY. We are made for more than this world can offer us…I’ve learned the love of God can move mountains – He merely spoke their existence in a very moment, after all! I don’t have to have the appearance that I’m perfect or have this whole Jesus thing down pat…because I DON’T. I’m a work in progress…that Jesus is enough, more than enough actually…that we are NOT home yet…Col. 1:29 “To this end I labor, struggling with ALL His energy, which so powerfully works in ME.” - Sydney Tanner, CIT 2009 |
